AGRICULTURAL FORUM FOR THE PROVINCE OF BASILAN Spearheaded/Convened by the Southern Philippines Development Authority Theme : AGRICULTURAL DIVERSIFICATION, A KEY TO SUSTAINABLE COCONUT FARMING AND INDUSTRY July 25, 2019 Zamboanga City BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: The advent of the Coconut Scale Insect infestation (CSI) that brought havoc to the coconut industry in the past years, had devastating affected on the livelihood of farmers and the agriculture sector of the economy in general as the productivity of this commodity declined. As with the other parts of the country, the coconut plantations in Basilan have suffered production set backs due to the infestation of this pest which have been widely known as ‘cocolisap’. Despite government efforts to contain this infestation, some areas have not fully recovered from the onslaught of these pests. In particular, the province of Basilan is one which until now certain municipalities are still experiencing and affected by these destructive organisms.
