2 Myofibrils- functional unit of the muscle cell; contractile organelles Myofilaments - contractile proteins of muscle Myosin- thick filaments Actin- thin filaments Sarcomere- Functional unit of a myofibril; a compartment where Myosin & Actin overlap. As the sarcomeres shorten, the entire muscle contracts.

3 Thick Myofilament- Myosin Motor protein- convert chemical energy in ATP to mechanical energy to push or pull cellular structures. Anatomy of Myosin- 2 golf clubs twisted together. Myosin heads- extend toward the thin filaments; rocking of the head causes contraction. Myosin tails- lie parallel to each other and are held in place by M-line proteins.

4 Thin Myofilament- Actin Actin- twisted strand of Mardi Gras Beads Myosin-binding site- point where myosin heads attach during contraction. Tropomyosin- found in the groove between actin strands Covers the myosin-binding site and block actin-myosin binding in relaxed muscle. Troponin- glues Tropomyosin to Actin When Ca2+ binds to Troponin it “unglues” Tropomysin from Actin and lets the myosin-head connect
