Solar System Summary 1: The Earth ASTR 1101 The Earth The Earth is 12,756 km in diameter at the equator. The Earth is 12714 km in diameter through the poles. Contrary to common thought the earth is not a sphere but rather slightly flattened, an oblate spheroid. The Earth has a mass of 5.97 x 10^24 kg or 1 Earth mass. The density of the Earth is 5.52 gm/cm^3. This is an average density based on the ratio of mass/volume. The rotation period for the Earth is 24 hours, which is its solar period. The sidereal period is 23 hours and 56 minutes. The revolution period around the sun is 365.2422 days. The surface of the Earth is as we all know, covered 75% with water and tectonic and volcanic activity. The water that is on Earth makes it very unique in comparison to the rest of the planets.
