ASTR 1101 Neptune Neptune is the 8 th planet from the sun and is very similar to Uranus. Neptune has a diameter of 49500 km. This is equal to 3.9 Earth diameters. Neptune is slightly larger through the equator than the poles. It is an oblate spheroid. Neptune has a mass of 1.03 x10^26 kg or 17.2 Earth masses. The density of Neptune is 1.76 gm/cm^3. It rotates once in 16.05 hours or 0.67 Earth days. A year is 164.79 Earth years long. Neptune has a thinner atmosphere than Uranus. It, too, is blue in color due to the relatively high abundance of methane. Neptune's bands are a bit more distinct than those on Uranus or Saturn. Neptune, like Jupiter, sports a large spot. This dark blue, hurricane-like storm has been present for a long period of time. (answers.com) The interior is much like Uranus as well, with a rocky core that is surrounded by ice.
