ASTR 1101 Venus Venus is the second planet from the sun. It has a diameter of 12 104 km. This is equal to 0.95 Earth diameters. Venus has a mass of 4.869 x10^24 kg or 0.82 Earth masses. The density of Venus is 5.24 gm/cm^3. It rotates once is 243 days, in a retrograde rotation. Venus completes one day in 117 Earth days. Venus was thought that below its dense clouds, it might be very Earthlike and might even have life. That was a very wrong assumption after further exploration. It was found out that Venus might actually be one of the least habitable planets in the solar system. The planet is very hot and has a very suffocating atmosphere. The pressure from the atmosphere Is tremendous and causes extreme temperatures due to the greenhouse effect. The atmosphere is made mostly from carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Also in the upper atmosphere there are extremely strong winds all of the time. (solarsystem.nasa.gov) Most of the surface of Venus is smooth, rolling plains. Two thirds
