CARBONATE SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Chemical or biological sedimentary rocks originate by precipitation of minerals from water through various chemical or biological processes. They can be divided based on their mineralogy and chemistry into 5 types: carbonates; evaporates; siliceous sedimentary rocks; iron rich sedimentary rocks and phophorites. carbonate rocks can be divided into limestones and dolomites. Precambrian and Paleozoic carbonate successions include abundant dolomite, whereas Mesozoic and Cenozoic carbonates consist mostly of limestone. CHEMISTRY AND MINEROLOGY the elemental chemistry of carbonate rocks is dominated by calcium, magnesium and carbonate. expressed as oxides, CaO, MgO and CO 2 make up more than 90% of the average carbonate rock. modern carbonate sediments are composed mainly of aragonite but they also include calcite and dolomite. because magnesium can readily substitute for calcite in he rhombohedral lattice of calcite crystals, we recognize both low-magnesian claite and high-magnesian calcite.
