Sarah Frank Pols 209 A Country Paper - Belgium Belgium declared its independence from the Netherlands on October 4,1830. King Leopold was pronounced king on July 21, 1831. Today, the government of Belgium is a federal parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. Brussels, the Capitol of Belgium has been informally nicknamed the Capitol of Europe. The cosmopolitan city is home to the headquarters of NATO and the European Union. Organizations such as the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament also reside in Brussels. According to the University of Kent at Brussels, over “one thousand governmental and non-governmental organizations” also call Brussels home. Finally, Diplomatic Missions, arguably the worlds largest international press corps, and over 700 multi- national corporations exist in Brussels and the immediately surrounding area. The Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) makes its home in nearby Mons. The history of Belgium is been significantly effected by ethnicity and language. In the 1970’s, the country separated; dividing itself into three administrative regions: Brussels, Flanders, and Wallonia. The CIA World Fact book says that, the separation was largely based on “tensions” between the various ethnic and language groups. The Dutch make up the majority of inhabitants to the northern Flanders region. The majority of residents in the southern Wallonia region are French.
