GANGS IN AMERICA TODAY 2 How many gangs are there in the United States? Gang and gang related activities have been of the American society for many decades. Otherwise known as organized crime by law enforcement agencies including the FBI, gangs have been responsible for criminal and illegal activities in the various states across the United States. Nonetheless, gangs usually consist of a group of friends, associates, or family members with an internal organization, common goals and a defined leadership. These gangs often control territories that remain guarded under their protection and where illegal and violent behaviors become the order of the day. Gang members are often recruited either by force or some join out of their own accords. Also, some members get recruited with the intention of seeking protection. There are various types of gangs in the United States; national street gangs, prison gangs, and organized gangs. Statistics indicate that about one in every four American is a member or affiliates to gang activities (Decker, & Pyrooz, 2015). As a result of these statistics, efforts by law enforcement agencies to curtail their dealings have proven futile and as such there are over 30 gangs still actively operating in various states across the United. It is impossible to clearly ascertain when gangs started cropping up in the United States because of the fact that they thrive under the belief that there is strength in numbers. However, it is believed that the industrialization period that gave rise to urban societies contributed significantly in the rise of street gang. Specifically, the cities of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles are attributed to have been the epicenter of gangs and gang-related activities. Because of the rampant poverty levels that forced many people into crime. Additionally, gangs during that period were aligned to European ethnicities and therefore, it was common to find Polish, Italian gangs controlling major parts of these cities.
