DRUG ABUSE 2 PART 1 Statistics carried out by the United States government in 2018 revealed that approximately 9.4 percent of persons aged over 12 years was abusing illegal drugs or using prescription drugs for non-medicinal purposes. NSDUH, a study that was carried out in 2013, found that though the rates of illicit drug use had remained stable since 2002 with the abuse of some hard drugs declining, the use of marijuana had recently been on the rise. Following the legalization of the use of the drug either entirely or with doctors permit in all of the US states except two, marijuana has now risen to become the most popular drug in the United States with over 19.8 users. It is this move that has led the state of San Francisco to apply California's new rules of marijuana legalization to convicts that were previously charged with its possession, use or trafficking.
