Vikings in Scandinavia In the 9 th century, the Vikings from Scandinavia started expanded their territories and as a result settlements were established in Iceland and Greenland. This was the expansion that led them to North Atlantic and hence towards the Middle East and Russia but the main regions colonized by them where Great Britain, Ireland, Greenland, Normandy, and Faroe Islands. This expansion had different reason behind it according to different historians. Raids from the Europeans especially from Frankish empire on Scandinavia in order to baptize the Vikings motivated the Scandinavians to raid Europeans and they certainly did ( Simpson, 1987). Although it was considered that religious reasons were behind the expansion and colonization but this does not seem to be based entirely on religion as the Vikings raided British Christian hermitages instead of Frankish due to the their wealth. Another reason mentioned in history for this expansion and colonization is the fact that the eldest Scandinavians from the family used to inherit the family assets while the younger ones had to struggle to earn wealth. There are still many confusions about the actual reason why they actually colonized vast overseas areas. These raids and colorizations are the reason why the culture and language of the Vikings has influences of their cultures. Before the influence of the European world on the Scandinavian religion, the Vikings used to follow the Norse mythology and believed in heroes and gods such as Thor and Odin. In the history, Vikings are mostly portrayed as the haters of Christianity during the Viking age but as they had many gods, a new concept of religion and god was not entirely unacceptable for them. Even their raid on British monasteries is also thought as an attempt to get rich rather than the one to get a revenge based on religion. During the Viking age in Scandinavia, there were major changes in religion were seen due to the raids and attacked on foreign areas. The struggles of

German and Anglo-Saxon preachers to change the religion of Scandinavians finally started to show in the middle of 11 th century ( Simpson, 1987). Vast areas of Norway and Denmark started to show the signs of Christianity as a thriving religion there. In the 12 th century the influence of Christianity grew stronger and in the mid of this century, Christianity was finally established in Scandinavia. One such evidence can be seen in an ancient church standing among graves of the Scandinavians. The Scandinavia’s land consisted of plains and farmlands (modern Sweden), mountains (Norway), and islands (Denmark). Most of the Scandinavians were farmers and they used to live in small colonies. They grew crops and farmed all types of farm animals and birds like cattle, pigs, chickens, geese, sheep and goats etc. whose meat they used as food in winters. The shape of the houses, the Vikings used to live in, was mostly rectangular with a fireplace in the center to keep the house warm and also to cook food. The houses were made of wood with a small number
