Domestic Policy: Kyleigh Spier General terms: ● Client is a person or organization using the services of a lawyer or other professional person or company; client politics is when one small group benefits and a larger group pays the cost. ● Majoritarian politics is a system in which almost everybody pays but almost everybody benefits as well. ● Entrepreneurial politics is a system in which most people benefit but a small group pays. ● Interest Group Politics is when one a small group pays and a small group benefits as well. ● Costs is something that people believe will be a burden they have to bear if a policy is adopted while Benefits refers to a satisfaction people believe they will enjoy if a policy is adopted. Domestic Topics/Terms: 1. Social Welfare Programs ● Preamble "promote the general welfare" - The Preamble states what America believed should make up the goal of government. Stating that it should promote the general welfare means that the government shouldn’t restrict the health and happiness of the country and its people. (Fairly basic) ● Constitution "provide ... general welfare" - The difference in interpretation can lead to someone say that the government should spend on anything necessary to the nation at the time. The other interpretation is that the government will spend on anything necessary to the protection and running of the country. The justification behind programs like Social Security. ● Social Security and Health Care (big voting issue) - The programs seemingly provide general welfare for American citizens, which is why Congress passed the policy. These institutions were necessary for many Americans during the Great Depression; it was a guarantee of general welfare. ● Insurance and assistance programs - The idea was incorporated by Social Security. It would provide for the needy in a time when they were down. It was seen as necessary during the Great Depression. It has since grown to cover millions of Americans even today. The question is if health care should be a guaranteed right of the people through insurance.
● Weighs and Means Committee - The primary committee that determines a recommendation for issues like tax, revenue, duties, and trade agreements. They decide how much the US needs to make, how much the can spend, and how much something is worth. ● Means Test - It determines if someone falls below a income. If someone has been proven to make an income that the can’t survive off of they are eligible for some insurance and assistance programs. ● Majoritarian vs. Client Policies - Majoritarian politics aids the many at the expense of many. Client politics is aiding the few at the expense of the many. Majoritarian wouldn’t require a means test and are less debated than Client Politics where people are apprehensive to give money to people they don’t know anything about, but it is hard to when over any American when it comes to spending money.
