Paleoanthropology (9/18) – not on 9/20 exam The study, the recovery, and the interpretation of the fossil remains of our ancestors; study cultures that no longer exist Subdivisions: Archaeology, Physical Anthropology/Biological Anthropology also introduction to linguistics: key component to intelligence, the story of human evolution interested in hominids and ancient humans has to draw from a range of disciplines work with a range of different scientists: o Geologists o Paleontologists – study the past based on fossil forms o Palynologists o Osteologists – study bones o Taphonomists – study how things become fossils Understand the relationship between biology and culture and the evolution of our species– the biocultural approach Culture is only one mechanism for which we adapt to the environment, also adapt through our bodies – biological; biological adaptation takes much longer than cultural adaptation Culture is learned but can be passed across generations so each generation must learn the knowledge of the previous generation, but biological adaptation is passed across generations without our knowledge Archaeology: Concerned primarily with studying the past through its material means: artifacts, ecofacts, and features; in order to describe the past: who, what, when, where; drawing on time, location, the distribution of artifacts Concerned with analyzing and reconstructing past ways of life, how we use
