Shantell Miller 9/3/19 Pre-Semester Reading Response The article, “The Making of Space, Race and Place” by Maggie Dickenson takes a look at New York City’s war on graffiti. This war started in the 1970s and has continued to the present. During this same period, the city was going through a neoliberal reconstructing process. This contributed to the reaction of political leaders, the business community, and the media. This article explores the racialization and criminalization of the underprivileged youth, who the author dotes as writers, who practiced graffiti in a very public way. After the prosperous 60s, came the 70s fiscal crisis. It was started when US Economic stagflation hit caused by the large movement of middle-class residents to the suburbs and drained the city of tax revenue. This crisis hit poor people the hardest, but served as an opportunity for the business community to implement policies that push out the poor and working-class citizens. The
