The system is split into three branches: legislative (house and senate/writes law), executive (president/enforces law), and judiciary (supreme court/interprets law). Separation of powers occurs at a federal level and state or local level as well. Each branch is accountable for their own separate duties, this system was deliberately designed so that each entity would not clash with one another. 2. Define and describe Checks and Balances, in your own words.Checks and Balances is an accountability system for the branches that govern our nation. It ensures that one branch never holds more power than the other branches. Checks and Balances functions through getting approval from the other branches in one way or another.
