RISKY DRINKING: DOCUMENTARY - 70% of Americans drink alcohol - Case 1: Denver – a young woman in her late 20s whose career requires her to travel and go to clubs/bars on most weekends. She is a binge drinker and enjoys the social atmosphere of social drinking. She drinks to mainly have a good time and as a response to negative emotional states which may have resulted from her breakup. She: o Kept wanting to hook up with different guys o Won’t drink for a week and then binge on the weekend o Had over 10 different drinks on both nights she went out o Was extremely emotional and fought with her friend in a bar o States she needs drinking because she doesn’t want to remember and needs it to “turn off her brain” – it helps her in the dating world - The biggest cohort of binge drinkers are between ages 18 and 34 o 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. is a binge drinker o Binge drinking for women = having 4 or more drinkers; men = 5 or more o BAC reaches 0.08 or beyond; increased impulsivity, risk for sexual violence and assault, unwanted pregnancies o Binge drinking accounts for half of the alcohol consumed by U.S adults - Drinking is now on a spectrum of risk; binge drinking puts you in the mild to moderate range of alcohol use disorder—if you drink more than you intend and find yourself craving alcohol - People who are at the greatest risk: o People in heavy drinking crowds o People who have a high alcohol tolerance o
