Mohr 1 What is a questioned document? According to Investopedia, a questioned document is an in-depth look into a document which is being question in the case of fraud, forgery, etc. The investigation is usually initiated in the event that large sums of money, heirlooms, or other assets are being called into question by a third party. However, when looking a documents, the part that mostly goes into investigation is the handwriting. The first concept we have to understand about handwriting comparison is collecting of writing standards. According to Forensic Science by James, Nordby, and Bell, there are two types of writing standards that are utilized for comparison purposes. These two types of writing standards are non-request writing and requested writing. According to Handwriting Standards & Disguise, non-request writing are quite simply writings which were indisputably prepared by the accused when he had no reason to think that they would be used for a handwriting comparison.
