Group Leader____________________________ 2.____________________________ 3.____________________________ 4.____________________________ 5.______________________________ Lab 2B: DC Circuits Containing Resistors and Capacitors - Charging and Discharging a Capacitor Objectives: 1. Use the supplied equipment to make a stable DC series circuit containing a resistor, a capacitor and a DC voltage source and measure the voltage across the capacitor. 2. Observe and qualitatively describe the charging and discharging (decay) of the voltage on a capacitor. 3. Experimentally determine the time constant τ for the decay. 4. Compare calculated values with measured results. Materials: 1. A 9-V battery 2. A resistor 3. A capacitor 4. A multimeter 5. 6 connecting wires with alligator clips Experimental Procedure For this part of the lab you will need to make periodic measurements of changing quantities using the supplied multimeter. A convenient time interval will be one measurement every 5 seconds or so. Select a method to prompt yourself to write down a series of measurements at the proper times. For example, you could recruit an assistant with a watch to prompt you to record values. Alternatively, you can download a free metronome application for your phone which will beep every 5 seconds. There may be other viable solutions which you can use. Pick your favorite timing technique and test it by making a dozen measurements from the multimeter at 5 second intervals. It makes no difference what you measure for this test.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
