The numbers on Figure are rates of °ow: cars/minute (or litres/minutes for °ow of water in pipes). There are four unknown ±currents²: i 1 ; i 2 ; i 3 and i 4 . We can set directions of these currents, for example, from A to B, from C to D, from C to A, and from D to B. How do we know in which direction a current °ows? We just set directions arbitrarily. If at the end we get a negative answer for a current, it means that the actual direction is opposite from what we have guessed. The junction rule: i in = i out : (1) This rule represents conservation of mass: the amount of water °owing into a junction equals the amount of water °owing out (or ±conservation of cars²: the number of cars that enter an intersection equals the number of cars that leave it).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
