SELF DRIVING VEHICLES 2 Self Driving Vehicles Introduction A self driving vehicle, also referred to as an autonomous car, a driverless car, robotic car, or an unmanned ground vehicle is a car that can move from one point to another without necessarily using a human driver to navigate it across traffic along roads. As such, the car is equipped with state of the art technologies that enable it to sense its environment thereby being in a position to navigate easily across traffic without human input (Richtel & Dougherty, 2015). The very first driver less car was put to test by Waymo, a software company in Mountain View, California on November 7, 2017. The purpose of this paper is to review the engineering ingenuity behind the concept of driverless cars, as well as to determine the impact of the invention of driverless cars within America’s traffic system. Literature Review Driverless cars are a new invention in the automobile industry largely motivated by the need to maintain safety of the drivers during the motoring exercise, as well as enhance the efficiency of the automobile. In this regard, it is evident through the invention of the driverless car that technological advancements in the automobile industry are taking a new twist, and in fact, spearheading the adoption of green technology within the transport industry. In essence, the autonomous car is equipped with a variety of features that enable it detect its surroundings. These features are comprised of the latest technologically engineered GPS system, radar, computer vision, laser light, as well as odometry (Ros, et al., 2012). Moreover, the driverless car has an advanced control system which plays the crucial role of interpreting all the sensory information that it obtains from the car’s surroundings. The system is also responsible for interpreting the sensory information that it collects thereby enabling the path to chart its navigation path . Furthermore, the sensory system enables the car to avoid any obstacle along the traffic, not to mention identifying any relevant signage. In the

SELF DRIVING VEHICLES 3 same vein, it is worthy to note that autonomous cars are designed with high-technology control systems for analyzing sensory data, which enable them to detect and identify other cars that are moving on the same road as them. Many countries across the world are considering the concept of unmanned ground vehicles as the concept spreads throughout the world and making a significant revolution in the automobile industry.
