Procedure In a 5 mL round bottomed flask, ground nutmeg (1.00 g, 2.31 mmol) was added with (3 mL) tert-butyl methyl ether. A reflux apparatus was used in order to obtain the crude product of trimyristin. The mixture was heated for 10 minutes and cooled at room temperature. After this step, two layers were present in the flask, a solid layer (nutmeg) and a liquid layer (crude trimyristin). A microscale filtration was used in order to filter the crude trimyristin layer into a 25 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Once the solution was filtered through, tert-butyl methyl ether (~ 2 mL) was added to the 5 mL round bottomed flask and refluxed again until warm. The process of microscale filtration was repeated into the 25 mL Erlenmeyer flask. A stream of air was then passed over the liquid in the flask until all the solvent had evaporated into a yellowish solid, resulting in (0.312 g) crude trimyristin.
