Carboxylic Acids Remember: Carbonyl groups are polar , with a partial negative charge (δ⁻) on the oxygen atom and a partial positive charge (δ⁺) on the carbon atom The carbonyl carbon is trigonal planar, with bond angles of 120°

Naming Carboxylic Acids IUPAC: Carboxylic acids are named using the suffix oic acid 1. Find the longest chain containing the -COOH group, and change the –e of the parent alkane with the suffix – oic acid 2. Number the carbon chain to put the -COOH group at C1, but omit this number from the name 3. All substituents are named as usual
