WEEK SIX SUMMARY 2 Week Six Summary Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL, Ch. 1 More and more people migrate to the United States and not all of these people speak or understand English. Therefore, their children enrolling in school may not know any English or are very limited in English. That is why it is imperative teachers learn how to work with the EL learners and accommodate their needs, so they flourish. Language barriers are not the only area teachers must be cognizant of, but also differences in cultures. It is important teachers get to know the students and their parents. Ways to do this are to have a lesson about themselves, such as Who Am I? Students may show pictures and make posters about themselves and their family and then share it with the class. It is an excellent way for the students to get to know one another. Chapter one gave ways that culture can affect interactions and how the interactions can have a positive or negative affect on the way the student learns. It is important to organize instruction and language to ensure the student is participating and learning. Small group
