Transport Layer 3-2 Chapter 3: Transport Layer (Lec1) our goals: understand principles behind transport layer services: multiplexing, demultiplexing reliable data transfer flow control congestion control learn about Internet transport layer protocols: UDP(User Datagram Protocol): connectionless transport TCP(Transmission Control Protocol): connection-oriented reliable transport

Why We Need A Transport Layer? Since several processes may be running on each host machine, a layer is needed to be responsible for process-to-process delivery (also called end-to-end delivery) Transport layer works as a liaison(لااصاتا) between application layer and lower layers (network layer, data link layer, and physical layer) Application layer programs use the services of the transport layer to communicate without being aware of the lower layers (i.e., not dependent on the physical network itself) Transport layer uses the network layer services and implement its own internal functions to hide the imperfection and the heterogeneous nature of the physical network Transport Layer 3-3

Transport Layer 3-4 Transport services and protocols provide logical communication between app processes running on different hosts transport protocols run in end systems send side: breaks app messages into segments , passes to network layer rcv side: reassembles segments into messages, passes to app layer more than one transport protocol available to apps Internet: TCP and UDP applicatio n transport network data link physical logical end -en d t ra nsport applicatio n transport network data link physical

Transport Layer Functionalities 1. Isolating the application layer from the technology, design, and imperfections of the network ( hiding transmission details from applications) 2. Fragmentation of large messages into segments and reassembly of segments into messages (segmentation) 3. Addressing 4. Multiplexing / Demultiplexing 5. Reliable data transfer (provide a reliable service on top of an unreliable network) Transport Layer 3-7

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
