1 Leilani Alvarez Mr. Grosse HUM-140-01 March 27, 2019 Art Assessment Question Lilith, terracotta relief, with wings, bird feet, owls, Mesopotamia, terracotta relief, 2200-2000 BCE The Burney Relief is also called the Queen of Night was created in 19th-18th century BCE and is made out of clay. This piece of art is a Mesopotamian terracotta meaning it's a earthenware, clay-based ceramics, of the Isin-Larsa or Old-Babylonian period. The art piece consists of a winged goddess-like figure naked with bird's talons atop two lions. It is said this figure is a likely representation of either Ereshkigal the goddess of the underworld or Ishtar the goddess of love, which I think embodies the motif. This art piece is traced back to southern Mesopotamia, this piece is one of a kind, and most likely the last of its kind as well due to its large size of 49.5 cm tall. Which tells us it was used in a Temple or church which makes it more rare coming from this time period. Furthermore, as for the realistic naked female figure each detail in her body was precisely made down to her lips that are slightly smiling in a deceiving way, interestingly enough the necklace she wears resembles the necklace from the god Ur. Something unique of this painting is how the palms of her hands show lifelines, the detail and resemblance to the real form of a living body is almost as equal to marble sculpture. Her figure down to her half outstretched wings to her talons show that this stone figure has Egyptian roots, and the size and rectangular shape of the plaque suggest it belonged to a shrine and was an object of worship which I think is what makes it symbolic, it embodies death and heaven just like Ereshkigal and Ishtar. This painting is similar to the Painting Persephone and Hades in that it also tells a mythical storyans in my opinion both share a very tragic story, aside from that I don’t see many similarities. A difference I did notice is the that the Burney Relief is made out of clay
