1 Leilani Alvarez Mrs Brittian AP English Lit January 13, 2017 Invisible Man “I am invisible, understand simply because people refuse to see me”(Prologue Pg1). The narrator seems to be neglected by others not because he doesn't exist but because he is black and around that time blacks weren't given the second thought they were an eyesore to the white people which drives the narrator insane. (Identity) “And I love light. Perhaps you'll think it strange that an invisible man should need light, desire light, love light. But maybe it is exactly because I am invisible. Light confirms my reality, gives birth to my form”. (Prologue.6). It's kind of ironic that the narrator loves the light because of his living circumstances he lives in such a hole but it kind of shows that even though that he is invisible to others he may still have that hope that one day he won't be.(Identity) “Without light I am not only invisible, but formless as well; and to be unaware of one's form is to live a death. I myself, after existing some twenty years, did not become alive until I discovered my invisibility”. (Prologue.6). It shows that being invisible is part of who he is and once he may lose being invisible what will define him

2 “Perhaps I like Louis Armstrong because he's made poetry out of being invisible. I think it must be because he's unaware that he is invisible. And my own grasp of invisibility aids me to understand his music.” (Prologue.8). the narrator might connect to this pout because maybe he had at one time in life never realize that he wasn't invisible “Before we can do anything else ‘ said kemp I must understand a little more about this invisibility of yours”(Pg.63). At this point in the story we start to hear more the invisible man and Griffins past (Identity) “To do such a thing would be to transcend magic and I beheld unclouded by doubt a magnificent vision of all that invisibility might mean to a man suddenly become this.”(Pg.66). This quote shows that with the power that came invisibility came his greed for the advantages of being invisible. (Identity) “You also” said a voice and suddenly I was forced towards the grave I made conclusive struggles and awoke.” ( Pg.80) this dream seems to show the guilt of the narrator never really connecting with his father maybe because of him begging a slave also it seems he feels guilty for giving his father he cheap funeral.(identity) “But you begin now to realize’,said the invisible man the full disadvantage of my conditions….grotesquely visible again.” ( Pg.82) I guess he never really noticed The negative

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
