1 Leilani Alvarez Eun Park Art 157-01 November 17, 2018 Teresa Margolles Research Paper Teresa Margolles is what you call a conceptual artist, meaning her artwork consists of photography, videography and performance art. Aside from being an artist, Margolles is a trained forensic pathologist and holds diplomas in the science of communication and forensic medicine from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. Morgalles as an artist and forensic pathologist, she has researched the social causes and consequences of death. Margolles main medium of work comes from the morgues themselves, her art communicates the emotional distress and social consequences of death by murder in Latin American caused by the cartel violence that has plagued her home. I will argue that yes, Teresa Margolles work may be seen as controversial and in many cases, her projects can be considered grotesque and going too far. But I believe that Margolles is an activist because she has exposed the rise cartel violence and the violent deaths in Mexico in the 1990s. And she has used her artwork to draw attention to the social realities, such as violent death and social inequality, which are often hard to consider. Margolles art projects include prioritizing death in her work in order to give corpses of victims of cartels new life and a chance to tell their story. Her work seeks to provide awareness of the rise of

I see her work as a movement. Teresa Margolles, art has a political standing in the Mexican community and brings awareness to the narco-violence that has corrupted her home and devastated the people. Margolles shows Mexico's deep tradition of art by presenting it in political issues. In the article, The Next Generation: Letters to Mexico by Battista Kathy the author discusses the art scene of Mexico City. The main focus in this article is on the new generation of upcoming artist and among them is Teresa Margolles. Teresa Margolles is introduced as a new upcoming Mexican contemporary artist and is given her rightful place amongst other great Mexican artists. The reason Mexico city in the past decade gained the formidable reputation for its great art is due to artist like Teresa Margolles, she doesn't just create something beautiful for it to be seen but to be heard, in most of her works every little detail has a deeper meaning.
