Arens 1 Alex Arens Mr. Halterman English 11 26 April 2019 Analytical Essay In Jack London's "To Build a Fire," he reveals how a man faces multiple obstacles along the way through a harsh winter in the forest. Instead of thinking intuitively and beyond the obvious, he must depend on what he thinks he should do when problems arise. Before the unnamed man left on his expedition, an old timer warned him "that after fifty below no one should travel alone in the Klondike" (London 238). If the man at the beginning of the story had listened to the old timer, he would never have had to be in any of the situations. But it costs him his life because the man likes to think for himself. London shows readers that if actions are analyzed with instinctive insight, the outcome of events can change dramatically. "The trouble with him was that he had no imagination" (231-232) says London. This tells us that you have to use your imagination and think about creative ways to get out of the situation you are in to make it through difficult times.Through tone, theme and characters, in "To Build a Fire," Jack London reveals the struggle of man against nature and how mankind in general no longer trusts their instincts to think beyond the surface of life and its situation to survive in a world where man is less important than nature's forces.
