ETHICS ASSIGNMENT Individuals working in the media are often faced with a myriad of ethical issues. One of the most challenging ethical issues for media workers is how to handle conflict of interest. Impartiality is a very fundamental pillar of ethical journalism. Basically, being impartial in journalism means reporting news and stories with fairness, objectivity, and without any undisclosed conflicts interest that could potentially influence the journalist's coverage. Another daunting ethical challenge that faces journalist is determining when a matter is too private to report on. The Curtis Publishing v. Butts (1966) was a landmark case that helped to highlight the ethical challenge about the application of the actual malice standards to public figures. Simply put, the Curtis Publishing v. Butts (1966) was a case involving two public figures, Butts and Walker who were also the plaintiffs. The Saturday Evening Post (Defendant 1) was sued by Butts for publishing an article accusing him of match-fixing. The jury awarded the plaintiff $60,000 in general damages as well as $30,000 in punitive damages for defamation (Christians et al, 2015).
