Purpose The purpose of this experiment was to determine the molar mass of a soluble unknown compound by measuring the freezing point depression of the solution. Procedure The procedure for this lab can be found on pages 34- 38 in “General Chemistry CHE111L Laboratory Manual Spring 2018”. Data tables Carbon copies of data tables have been attached to the back of this lab report. Calculations 1. T f T f = T f solvent - T f solution Trial 1: 1.875- (-1.18)= 1.37 C Trial 2: 1.875- (-1.65)= 1.84 C Trial 3: 1.875- (-1.25)= 1.44 C 2. Molality T = i K f m Trial 1: 1.37= 2(1.86)m m= 0.37 Trial 2: 1.84= 2(1.86)m m= 0.49 Trial 3: 1.44= 2(1.86)m m= 0.34 3. Number of Moles Solute m= number of moles solute/ kg Solvent Trial 1: 0.37= x/ .02372 x= .0101 mole Trial 2: 0.49= x/ .02372 x= .0117 mole Trial 3: 0.34= x/ .02372 x= .0092 mole 4. Molar Mass MM= Mass of Solute/ Moles of Solute Trial 1: .894/ .0101= 88.51 g/mol Trial 2: .894/ .0117 = 76.41 g/mol Trial 3: .894/ .0092 = 97.17 g/mol

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
