Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to standardize a sodium hydroxide solution by titration with potassium hydrogen phthalate, KPH, using Phenolphthalein as the indicator. The standardized sodium hydroxide solution will then be titrated with an unknown acid to determine the molar mass of the unknown acid. Procedure The procedure for this lab can be found on pages 53- 60 in “General Chemistry CHEL-110 Laboratory Manual Fall 2017”. Data Tables Carbon copies have been attached to the back of this lab report. Calculations 1. # Moles NaOH Trial 1 (0.603)( 1 mole 39.997 ¿ = 0.0151 moles of NaOH Trial 2 (0.610)( 1 mole 39.997 ¿ = 0.01525 moles of NaOH Trial 3 (0.612)( 1 mole 39.997 ¿ = 0.0153 moles of NaOH 2. Molarity of NaOH Trial 1 ( 0.0151 0.289 ¿ = 0.5225 Trial 2 ( 0.01525 0.03104 ) = 0.4913 Trial 3 ( 0.0153 0.0316 ¿ = 0.4842 0.5225 + 0.4913 + 0.4842 3 = 0.4998 3. Moles of Unknown Trial 1 0.603 204.222 = 0.002952 Trial 2

0.610 204 .222 = 0.0029869 Trial 3 0.612 204.222 = 0.003 4. Average of Molarity of NaOH 0.5225 + 0.4913 + 4842 3 = 0.4993 5.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
