I. Abstract The objective of this experiment was to preform crystallization, a method of purification, by using a solvent pair to receive benzoic acid. Recrystallization was performed by using vacuum filtration and water, by pasture pipette filtration and centrifugation, and by methanol and water using vacuum filtration. II. Introduction 1. Why is the technique of recrystallization useful in organic chemistry? Recrystallization is a method used for purification. It’s a useful technique in organic chemistry because it removes impurities from substances. Recrystallization can be used in the real for, “for instance, the commercial purification of sugar is done by recrystallization on an enormous scale” (Williamson, p. 62). 2. What properties of a solvent are necessary for a good recrystallization? In other words how does one choose a solvent to use for a recrystallization? “Like dissolves like” is not sufficient to answer the question. In order for sufficient recrystallization, a good solvent must be chosen to do so. A good solvent will dissolve its solute when the solution is hot and not when the solution is cold. A good solvent will be able to be removed from the crystals so it can not react with the solute, it will not be flammable, non-toxic and inexpensive (Williamson, p. 63).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
