Purpose The purpose of this lab was to develop an understanding of temperature, heat, heat capacity, and specific heat. Calorimetry will be used to determine the specific heat of an unknown metal and to measure the heat of solution of an ammonium salt. Procedure The procedure for this lab can be found on pages 71-79 in “General Chemistry CHE110L Laboratory Manual Fall 2017”. Data Tables Carbon copies of data tables have been attached to the back of this lab report. Calculations Specific Heat of a Metal Unknown #1 1. Change in Temperature Metal = 25.0 ˚C - 98.0 ˚C = -73˚C Water = 25.0 ˚C – 21.3 ˚C = 3.7 ˚C 2. q H 2 O = 918.985 x 4.184 x 3.7 = 293.903 J 3. qMetal - q H 2 O = qMetal = - 293.903 J 4. SH metal 293.903 J ( 10.059 x 73 ) = 0.4 J/g. ˚C Heat of Solution 1. Change in temperature Trial 1 16.2 ˚C – 21.6 ˚C = -5.4 ˚C Trial 2 17.5 ˚C – 21.2 ˚C= -3.7 ˚C 2. qSolution Trial 1 (-4.184)(21.484)(-5.4) = 485.401 J Trial 2 (-4.184)(21.173)(-3.7) = 327.76 J 3.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
