Emirates IT Transformation 1 Emirates IT Transformation CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION 1.1. Company Review This Thesis paper is based on the Information Technology systems of the Emirates Group. The Emirates Group is an airline, which engages majorly in the commercial air transportation business. The Group, which was founded in 1959, has diversified its operations to venture into the airline and catering sectors. Since its establishment, The Emirates Group has expanded its network to serve in about 154 airports that are distributed across 82 countries in all continents of the world namely Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas (The Emirates Group, 2015). It is headquartered in Dubai, UAE and it is a subsidiary of Investment Corporation of Dubai. The Emirates Group offers a wide range of air transportation services among them passenger, excess baggage and cargo services. Alongside air transportation services, the company is involved with businesses like wholesaling and retaining consumer goods, engaging in hotel operations, selling of food and beverages, and providing in-flight and institutional catering services. Furthermore, the Emirates Group deals with operations like cargo handling, mail handling, aircraft cleaning, MEP contracting, bakery and food business, and online travel services. 1.2. Background of the Study The Emirates Group is one of the leading corporations in the world’s travel and tourism industry. For over half a century that it has been in operation, the company has exponentially spread its wings to establish a strong business in about 82 countries. It has evolved at a phenomenal rate over this period to become a dominant force in the air transportation industry. Despite its commendable dominance in the global market, it is undisputed that the Emirates Group is experiencing a significant challenge in coping with the dynamic nature of the contemporary travel and tourism industry. This market dynamism is largely attributed to the virtually unstoppable technological advancements, which have completely changed the operations of corporations in the travel and tourism sector. For instance, due to technological advancements, potential customers of air travel companies expect to be able to interact with the travel agencies in real-time as well as to complete online ticket bookings. They equally expect to be able to track their cargo and mails whenever they transport them through different destinations using an airline company.
