Michael Columbo Page 1 of 5 A-5-1 The term “hacker,” to many people, means an irresponsible, destructive criminal. While to term hacker, tend to have negative connotations, that is not always the case. It is a very broad term, with multiple meaning. Yes, some hackers are bad, others do it as a job to expose security vulnerabilities. In the early days of computing, a hacker was a creative programmer, who wrote very elegant or clever programs. Ordinally, the term hacker was not a negative word. It actually referred to someone doing something good. Hackers actually created some of the first computer operating systems. Some claim that some hacking is harmless. It comes down to the intent and purpose. Some is just trying to do something and see if they can. It can also be for security purposes. A fundamental problem with evaluating political hacking is that it can be hard to identify. I think this again depends on opinion and how it is viewed. I think if you agree with it, you might not see an issue. However, if you disagree you might feel it is wrong. I think it is a gray area. I also think it is how far you go with it. Hackers sometimes call themselves “security researchers” to avoid the now negative connotation of the term hacker. I can understand why they do that. The term hacker has become so stereotyped.
