Road to Confederation: An Analysis on The Legacy of John A. Macdonald By: Samir Jairath John A. Macdonald was the first prime minister of Canada, he was the father of confederation, and a major player in the unity of Canada. Many people have different opinions on Macdonald, some believe he was a corrupt, racist, drunk who was a stain on our heritage, while others feel he may have had some flaws, but overall he was a turning stone for Canada, who did much more good than bad. Personally, I side with the latter argument, he may have been racist, but majority were in those times, he may have also made some mistakes along the way, but overall he was loved by the majority of people in Canada, and he was the reason we are an independent nation. The article published on December 15th, 2014 in The Walrus, “Old Macdonald: Sir John A. was a racist, a colonialist, and a drunk. Why are we celebrating him" by Stephen Marche starts by bashing John A. Macdonald talking about how he has nothing iconic to honor him, compared to other presidents or founders, as well as the fact that he is not celebrated by the Scottish people of his own lineage. He then goes on to talk about Sir John A. Macdonald's different failures such as Canada remaining a British dominion with little say over affairs, the hanging of Louis Riel, and his hatred of immigrants. He portrays
