Michael Columbo Page 1 of 11 A-4-1 Intellectual property is the product of an individual’s creativity. It can include works of art, music, books or other creative inventions. Intellectual property is intangible in that it is not the physical representation which is the property, but the actual creation. Intellectual property can be copywritten, patented or trademarked. Copyright is a legal concept that defines rights to certain kinds of intellectual property. Copyright protects creative works such as books, articles, plays, songs, works of art, movies, software and videos. Facts, ideas, concepts, processes and methods of operation are not copyrightable. Copyright law give the copyright holder the rights to do the following: * Make Copies * Produce derivative works, like translations or movies based on books * Distribute copies * Perform the work in public * Display the work in public We have copyright laws to protect intellectual property. This is important, because it insures that the creator of the intellectual property receives income from their invention, but even more it gives people incentive to be creative. This ensures that our society will continue to benefit from the many creative things we need or simply enjoy. A-4-2 Previous technologies raised challenges to intellectual property protection. Digital technology and the Internet empowered us all to be publishers… In the past you had to use a typewriter. And then take to get published. Now you can use a computer it is you can immediately publish yourself. This also leads to people more easily copying other’s work. Copying software used to be common practice. I remember when windows first came out people were copying it left and right. Then they started having to have a key to use the program. The content industries claim about one-quarter of internet traffic worldwide consists of copy-right infringing material. There are so many things out there, even in college classes when you copy things from the internet and use them it is infringement, but people don’t even realize it. There are many problems, in regards to copy-right infringement, that effect many different people in many different ways. Sometimes people don’t realize things are copy- written, and they copy them. Some examples are music and movies and that was something that happened with Napster.
