Michael Columbo Page 1 of 5 A-6-1 The introduction of computers into the workplace generated many fears. It is fear of the unknown. It was something new, so naturally people were afraid and saw all the negatives- having to learn new skills, eliminating jobs, etc. The fear that computing technology and the Internet would cause mass unemployment might seem absurd now. As the book says, throughout history new technology has brought out these fears. Examples of this is the burning of weaving looms and the fear the industrial revolution sparked. History tend to repeat itself. A successful technology eliminates some jobs but creates others. You make take away some jobs, such as bank tellers, because of ATMs. But banks evolve and now banks have online Websites, and someone has to run them. Technology did not cause the Great Depression in the 1930s. Typical business cycles and the newly formed Federal Reserve Banks’s manipulation or interest rates and greed are the things that actually led to the Great Depression. Computers differ from earlier technologies in several key ways. Computers have a broader impact. They in almost every business there is. The rate of improvement and speed of improvement causes more job disruption then earlier technologies. Complex interactive computer systems guide workers through steps of jobs that required extensive training before. With computers you can have interactive training programs.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
