Introduction Laboratory Exercise 12: Vertebrates You will need your textbook as a guide for some of the questions below; your class notes can also help you with the questions. Since no physical specimens are available for this exercise, use the images of specimens provided in the discussion section of the exercise to answer the questions below. (1) Most fish are called gnathostomes because they are jawed vertebrates. You are provided with two specimens from this group: hammer head shark and marlin. For each specimen, answer the following questions: (a) To which gnathostome group does each specimen belong? Hammer head shark: Chondrichthyes Marlin: Osteichthyes (b) Name at least three distinguishing characteristics among the two groups. Chondrichthyes - Prismatic calcified cartilage, cartilage endoskeleton, and Pelvic clasper Osteichthyes- Endochondral bone, dermal fin rays made up by lepidotrichae, and 3 pairs of tooth bearing bones
