Dr. Weistein’s Talk- Amazon Rubber Economy (1850-1920) The boom was seen mostly as 1890-1910 “British stole rubber trees, planted in their own colonies and took over rubber economy so the Amazon rubber boom almost immediately collapsed” -textbook Rubber tappers- ppl working in rubber fields (seringueiros) 3 Main aspects of rubber economy- Origins, Image of Regional Elites (Brazilians), Nature of Labor Relations in the Amazon Origins: Demanded in bicycle craze (1890) automobiles (1895) 1850’s rubber was already main export in amazon- raw rubber but also small manufact. Sys. Rubber trees typically on land that wasn’t owned by anyone Amazonian Elites: Push for urban beautification and public cleaniness- spaces for urban upper/middle class Municipal govts frittered away funds for ^ Families wanted to show that they were civilized & cultured, spent wealth gained through rubber boom on large homes for beautification Wild rubber- no plantations in amazon Plantations only emerge in Asia
