Doe 1 John Doe Mr. Halterman English III 3 October 2018 Theme of Creation in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Mary Shelley’s life was fraught with peril and torment; her mother passed away shortly after giving birth to her, and Shelley herself had only one child survive out of five attempts. Throughout her life, Shelley endeavored to come to terms with her views on creation; she blamed herself for her mother’s death as well as the premature deaths of her children. One of her attempts to reconcile her feelings was the novel Frankenstein . Throughout the novel, the theme of creation is seen when Dr. Frankenstein creates the creature, when the creature discovers life, and when the creature rebels against his creator and endeavors to design a new world for himself. While Dr. Frankenstein succeeded in bringing life to a lifeless body, he is overwrought with guilt, disgust, and fear over his creation, signifying that creation of life itself is wholly terrifying and disturbing.
