Situational Leadership 2 Introduction This consultancy report will look at leadership styles, qualities and behaviors basing on a critical incident that occurred at Sidra Medicine, a hospital in Qatar (Chaussabel & Pulendran 2015, pg.435). First, the report highlights different frameworks that leaders adopt as well as their effectiveness and ineffectiveness in relation to handling a critical incident. Second, the report includes a comprehensive assessment of my leadership approach, behavior and qualities. This includes my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. The report ends by giving suggestions on how I can improve my leading capacity by turning my weaknesses into strengths, setting goals and evaluating myself after a set period of time. Part I: The Critical Incident A critical incident refers to an abnormal or undesirable situation that occurs suddenly and often threatens human life as it always tends to cause emotional or physical harm. In many instances, the effects of a critical incident are worrying to the extent that it can affect someone’s ability to handle the loss (Mahajan 2010, pg.69). Good examples of a critical incident would be injury or death of a coworker, death of a patient after rescue attempts or any event which can have excessive media attention. Since Sidra Medicine was set up, the hospital has been growing at a rapid rate as the number of patients served per year keeps on increasing. The steady increase in clients served, however, has created a huge nurse to patient deficit which has led to reduced quality of healthcare. The nurses are overstretched. Despite several calls by the nursing matron for addition of personnel, the management has been slow to respond. About a month ago, at Sidra Medicine, two mothers and an infant died in the maternity ward due to delayed medical assistance from the nurses. After giving birth, the two mothers died from excessive bleeding before nurses could not reach in time to give them clinical assistance as they were attending to

Consequently, the incident had a significant as well as an adverse impact on the likely outcome of the hospital. The adverse impact effect that it had on the likely outcomes is that it disrupted the normal activities as it created an atmosphere of panic among the hospital staff and caused trauma to the patients as well as the family members of the departed. Trauma among the patients and panic among the clinical staff affected the quality of medical outcomes.
