ETHICAL ISSUES IN HIGHER EDUCATION 2 Ethical Decision-Making in Higher Education Introduction Ethical conduct and decision-making in institutions of higher learning is of particular concern to the public for various reasons. Other than training students on their various fields of specializations, universities are required to promote an ethic-based learning environment that will shape the conduct of the students in and out of school. Being custodians of knowledge, these institutions influence the moral development of the students and affect the social and economic wellbeing of the society. It is, thus, important that tertiary learning institutions develop comprehensive codes of ethics that will enable students to acquire ethical decision-making skills and practices (Rothman, 2017). The morality and socio-economic wellbeing of a society depends on the ethical standards in institutions of higher learning as these institutions are responsible for making the future leaders. Ethical Issues in Higher Education Inasmuch as higher learning institutions to produce graduates who responsible members of the society, these institutions have not been able to achieve this goal. Higher learning institutions have been characterized by ethical transgressions for quite a long time. According to Osipian’s study, some of the contemporary ethical issues in universities and colleges include fraudulent admission procedures, mismanagement of finances as well as academic dishonesty (2012).
