Synopsis/Executive Summary: The purpose of this case study is to determine based on Alibaba’s strategic international policy, as well as the factors within the pillars of the strategy tripod, if they are truly ready to go global or not. We will be looking at the Alibaba enterprise to understand the problems brought about through the case study and what they could possibly do better to improve their chances. First thing we need to do is take a look at the company. Alibaba is focused on online as well as mobile marketplaces and they focus on both retail and wholesale trade. Additionally to this main piece of business they are also working in the cloud computing sector, as well as online shopping platforms. Most of the business is conducted through many of the company’s subsidiaries. The company has offices in China, India, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Korea, Germany, the UK and the US. Looking at the case study there are a few issues or problems that stick out. These include the fact that Alibaba was cautious about competing head to head with the world’s largest corporations, broad scale supplier/financial integrity issues growing concern over the Alibaba product. The last of which has forced the company back to a private holding from the previously public holding. While you could also point out the current state of the United States tariff situation as something that would give us pause to the international success of Alibaba, the other two issues are more in the control of Ma and the company so I chose to address them. Situation and Findings: Internally, Alibaba is finding itself in a tough spot as Ma has announced that he is stepping down from the company entirely by 2020. Based on the amount of direction that has been provided by Ma, including his most recent push for the eWTP, the company would be losing its most important leader and innovator. for answers as they continue to grow and are faced with the task of trying to be competitive with companies such as Wal-Mart, E-Bay, and Amazon. Ma himself said himself that they are purposely cautious to swim with the sharks. Externally, Alibaba continues to see pressures as the threat of intense competition continues. Additionally, the increasing need for compliance with regulations and also the tariff war taking place make it even harder for them to succeed. . “If the company is not able to
