Hero is great but not perfect Tragedy’s 3rd Characteristic 1. It is partially the hero’s fault his downfall took place Tragedy’s 4th characteristic A hero’s misfortune is not wholly deserved Tragedy’s 5th characteristic The protagonist usually gains some kind of understanding along with his defeat Tragedy’s 6th characteristic Watching the end of a tragedy should result in exaltation instead of depression. Thesis From Hamlet to Macbeth to Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare seems to have an affinity for tragedies. Othello is no different. Is it, however, a tragedy in the Aristotelian sense? Aristotle has a unique view of what the concept of a tragedy is. Today, it is widely accepted as a basis for what a tragedy should be defned as. At frst glance Othello seems to ft this description, but as we delve deeper we see that this may not be the case.
