Briana Palencia CHEM 3321-152 4/24/2019 Experiment 13 PreLab: Oxidation of Alcohols: Oxidation of Borneol to Camphor Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to oxidize borneol to camphor. Hypochlorous acid will be used to prepare camphor. Potassium iodide-starch test will be used to test whether hypochlorous acid is present during the beginning of the reaction and will be used again to test if enough bisulfate is in the mixture. The product will be purified by doing sublimation. An IR, MP, and NMR of the product will then be taken to identify the product and its’ purity.
