Briana Palencia SOCY 1001-102 October 15,2018 Labeling theory states that the labels people are given influence how others perceive them and how they perceive themselves. This can result in influencing their behavior in becoming deviant or into conformity (playing the part). Additionally, labeling theory also states that deviance isn’t inherent, but instead determined by the social context. When a person is labeled deviant due to a certain behavior, this creates a universal agreement from the rest of society that they are “bad”. This results in the individual or group to be treated differently or be ostracized from the rest and it may affect how the individual or group view themselves. Moreover, once labeled deviant, other behaviors performed by the individual or group will also be labeled as deviant. A situation where labeling theory can be applied is when the 9/11 attacks happened. On September 11 of 2001, an Islamic extremist group performed a series of terrorist against the United States.
