Palencia 1 Briana Palencia WRTG 3020-066 Annotated Bibliography 3/30/2019 Annotated Bibliography Engstrom, Erika, and Colby Miyose. “Boys Over Flowers: Korean Soap Opera and the Blossoming of a New Masculinity | Academic Article.” ResearchGate. Accessed March 19, 2019. . Boys Over Flowers is a 2009 South Korean television drama that influenced the start of the “flower boy” trend in South Korea. In this article, the authors argue that Boys Over Flowers introduced a new version of masculinity that incorporated elements of femininity to the South Korean society and this version of masculinity challenged traditional masculinity. Miyose and Engstrom articulate this new masculinity through an analysis of the main male actors’ physical appearances, such as dressing elegantly, having smooth skin and silky hair. However, traditional masculinity characteristics were also incorporated, where the actors have masculine-like competitive characteristics and certain body physiques. While the authors only analyzed how the impact of one Korean drama had on Korean society, the authors showed how Boys Over Flowers created a new concept of “new man” where men and women are seen as equal by portraying males as similar to females. This text is useful in that it demonstrates an example where a form of media influences the beauty standards of a society. Boys Over Flowers was an adaptation of a Japanese manga and this was another example of how the manga/book influenced the decision of how a television drama adaptation decided to portray the actors. Moreover, this article illustrated how a form of media influenced how a society sees themselves, which is also a key point in my article, by initiating the change of what is masculinity in South Korea.
