Ng 1 Edwin Ng Mr. Brooks and Mrs. Gordy World Studies, Period 3 and 4 4 March 2019 The Innocence of Robespierre As the French Revolution undergoes and chugs along, many people suggest that Robespierre was guilty for using his power illegally and authorizing terrorist acts such as mass slaughters against the French people to maintain his control. However, that was not the case with the man, but instead he is innocent from the charges of using his power “illegally” or “forcibly” and authorizing the any sort of terrorist act upon the people to maintain his control. To begin, Document A suggests that “the law ought to impose only penalties that are… necessary; the punishments ought to be proportionate to the offense and useful to society.” With this, it shows that Robespierre did not authorize any terrorist attacks to maintain his control but however, enacted these acts to protect society from collapsing upon itself. Without these acts, counterrevolutionaries and enemies of the state would undermine the country and create chaos and havoc. But thanks to the fear tactic that Robespierre put out to protect society rather than implement control over the country, he delivered safety for all the French people that were with the state and allies as well.
