COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to provide an introduction to the field of human resources management, which is an important aspect of the management of all organizations – large, medium or small; commerce, manufacturing, public sector, voluntary, or charity. In today’s rapidly changing world, organizations are realizing that their greatest asset is their employees, and that the effective management of people is a key factor in their overall success. This course provides an overview of essential human resources management (HRM) concepts and techniques, specifically related to the main areas of HRM activity. Whether you become a business owner, supervisor, manager or HRM professional and whatever industry or sector you work in, this course will provide you with helpful information and insights to help you deal with issues relating to the management of people. In short, the course will provide you with a strong foundation in understanding the basic principles and practices that human resources management entails. Through readings, lectures, case studies, and experiential exercises, you will be introduced to frameworks, models, principles and practical examples from the human resources literature, and you will learn how to apply this learning to particular situations. Readings are scheduled and required to provided a foundation for each class session, and are a starting point for exercises and discussions. You are expected to show a high level of commitment to the course by carefully reading the assigned material prior to coming to class each day; this will enable you to come to each class ready to contribute constructively to our exercises and discussions. By contributing in this way, you will help to make the course a memorable and enjoyable experience for all concerned. AREAS OF LEARNING The course has six overall areas of learning: 1. Human Resources Management in Perspective. 2. Meeting Human Resources Management Requirements. 3. Developing Effective Human Resources. 4. Total Rewards. 5. Building Effective Employee-Employer Relationships. 6. International Issues in Human Resources Management.
