1 Briana Palencia HIST 1011: 10AM Greeks, Romans, Kings, Crusaders February 21, 2018 The Discovery of Identity in the Ancient Hebrew Community Genesis and Exodus are books in the Hebrew Bible that depict the journey of the Hebrews to the land of Canaan. Through the covenants made between God and the Hebrews, the audience can see the concerns of belonging somewhere and unification being reflected through these writings. In Genesis, Abraham is told by God to move out with his family to the land that will belong to him and his descendants. Abraham is promised a great nation and those “who curses you [him] I [he] will curse; and by you [him] all the families of the earth shall bless themselves." 1 This moment symbolizes the beginning of Hebrews becoming monotheistic. God approaches Abraham and gives him and the people an incentive to want to follow under God’s reign. God provides the Hebrews a leader that will take them to the right place they will call home. Before monotheism was introduced, the Hebrews “worshipped a variety of gods, including spirits believed to reside in natural objects.” 2 The belief of worshipping more than one God created a division among the Hebrews and no sense of community. By monotheism being introduced, it was the beginning of uniting the Hebrews.
